The following are a few things I have noticed people don’t clean often in their homes I am not here to judge (though it way seem that way) but maybe to make aware of an on going situation.
Trash cans- It’s where your trash is held so people don’t think about the necessity in having to clean it. Just because it holds the trash you think that’s it, but what about the smell or the juices or anything that touches the rim? Trash cans are a breeding ground for germs. Currently my trash can is in need of a cleaning. I’ll spray it with some Myers Multi-purpose spray and wipe it down with a Clorox wipe, but I really just want a new one. I’ve had this one for about 4 years its time for its resting place.
Dust pans- This tool is used to clean with but never thought of as worth cleaning. If you’re like me leaving your shoes by the door keeps outside dirt at bay and gives you less to clean. In other words I can lay and sit on my floor with out working about what I tracked in. Let’s say you walk around your house or apartment in your shoes and it’s time to clean, how many times do you use your dust pan before you think of cleaning it. (Side note) I’ve seen dust pans that had so much gunk on it, it looked like it needed to be soaked in hot water and bleach, that’s nasty! The next ones is an other cleaning tool for the floor.
Mops- Mops clean up all your big spills but have you taken the time to clean the mop? I was raised to fill up the mop bucket half way and add some Fabuloso and/or bleach and go around each room a few times. When the water looks dirty dump it and get new water and add Fabuloso again. Depending on the foot traffic of the home your mop and water could get dirty quick. That’s why changing the water is important. It’s crucial to clean the mop on its off time to disinfect anything you picked up. Tip: Filling the bucket 🪣 three quarters with hot water add bleach and let it sit for over an hour. That will get the dirt stains off, unless it’s a lost cause. Thank it for its service say good bye and get a new one. Please don’t be one of those people who leaves the mop in dirty water for hours and days it’s just marinating the mop in dirty water. As soon as you finished mopping dump the water add fresh water to rinse the mop of that’s left on the mop and put everything away. Out of site out of mind.
Doors/ knobs- This one is my favorite, because it’s telling you. Homes with kids is where you might see messy doors, also depending on the door. Light doors leave finger prints it goes unnoticed but with time you’ll see it. Think about the last time you cleaned your door knob… now think about how often you use it. It’s pretty crazy how people don’t have though more and more. Anything I touch on a daily gets sprayed with disinfectant weekly. I make sure to wash my hands when I come in to my apartment and I spray my keys and front door knob every few days. I might be the only one touching it but I like knowing its clean.
Couch cushion covers- You sit, he sits, she sits, the dog gets on walks around to find his spot until he sits. but when does it get cleaned? As a New Yorker riding the subway is normal. What’s not normal is thinking about how a homeless person might of sat on that seat before you and how you went straight home and sat on the sofa . A friend once told me he would never wear out side clothes in his bed and that stuck with me for years. I am more aware about the things I touch being mindful to not bring anything home. Changing your clothes when you get home is a great way to leave the out side world out of your favorite places. Tip: If your cushions have a zipper, remove the cover and slip it in the washer. If that’s not an option you can always buy sofa covers and place them in the washer whenever you think they need cleaning.
My tips on cleaning tools to replaced and how often. If I don’t want to touch it I throw it out.
Sponges- 1 a month in my apartment.
Toothbrushes-dentists recommend 3 to 4 months.
Brooms- Depends on its use and look.
Toilet brushes- same as brooms.
Mops- 6 months to a year depending on care.
Rags- at your discretion.
An other tip on making cleaning more enjoyable, buys rubber gloves that way you don’t have to touch any of the icky stuff and clean and with ease.
I hope these tips aid you on your cleaning journey and remember It’s your home you make the rules I’m just here to help.
